3. In the diagram below, neuron 3 receives signals from two different presynaptic cells, neuron 1 and neuron 2. The input from neuron 1 is excitatory and the input from neuron 2 is inhibitory. The book talks about postsynaptic signals being graded, as opposed to an all-or-none response seen in the action potential. If a pre-synaptic cell releases a large amount of excitatory neurotransmitter into the synaptic cleft, how will that affect the PSPs? Does that large release ensure that the postsynaptic cell will initiate an action potential, and what role does the axon hillock play in this process/decision?
