Nitrogen dioxide, an atmospheric pollutant, can combine with
water to form nitric acid. Calculate the ΔG°rxn and the Kp for this
reaction at 25 °C and indicate whether the reaction is spontaneous
or not.
3 NO2(g) + H2O(l) → 2 HNO3(aq) + NO(g)
Given the ΔG°f (kJ/mol) of each one:
3 NO2(g) = 51.3
H2O(l) = -237.1
2 HNO3(aq) = -110.9
NO(g) = 87.6
