Sulfuric acid (concentrated and dilute) should be handled with
care. Wear gloves and replace gloves immediately if contact is
suspected to reduce risk of transfer. The resulting carbon snake
will be acidic.
Method
Fill a 25 mL beaker approximately 1/3 full with sugar.
Add enough acid to wet the sugar then stir with a stirring rod
for around 30 seconds. The reaction will take a couple of minutes
to start.
The sulfuric acid removes water from the sugar in a highly
exothermic reaction. The white sugar turns into a black carbonized
tube that pushes itself out of the beaker. The equation is:
C12H22O11(s) + H2SO4(aq) → 12C(s) + 11H2O(l)
