Observe a ceiling fan being turned off; then do the
following:
1- Describe what is happening using words:initial velocity,
final velocity, acceleration, etc.
2- Write the formulas governing the situation above.
3- Having nothing but your observation of the ceiling fan being
turned off, solve the equation(s) and find the amount of
acceleration that made the fan stop.
(HINT: Can you measure time elapsed from when it was turned off
(you hear the click) to when it was completely off? Also can you
figure out the initial rotational speed? For example, can you count
how many complete rotations are in one second? Can you relate the
rotation to 360 degrees in a circle? If the rotation in one second
is not complete, can you use the number of blades and the angle in
each section for that?)
Please answer with diagram, formulas, and your
numbers.
