Problem 3 (40 points) Two lenses are placed a distance 3f apart as shown below. The first lens, Lens 1, is a converging lens and has focal length fi = f. The second lens, Lens 2, is a diverging lens and has focal length f2 = - f. The black dots in the figure denote the focal points of the lenses. An object of height h is placed a distance f in front of Lens 1. Lens 1 Lens 2 h 들 3f (a) Draw a ray diagram for the image formed by Lens 1. You need to only show two rays. Make sure to indicate clearly the locations of the object and the lens and be sure to denote clearly where the image is formed. (b) What is the image distance from Lens 1? Is the image real or virtual? (c) Is the image upright or inverted and what is the magnification? For Parts (d)-(g), treat the first image as the object for the second lens. (d) Draw a ray diagram for the image formed by Lens 2. You only need to show two rays. Make sure to indicate clearly the locations of the object and the lens and be sure to denote clearly where the image is formed. (e) What is the distance from Lens 2 to the final image? (f) Is the final image real or virtual? Is the final image inverted compared to the original object or not? (g) What is the total lateral magnification of the two lens system?
