c) A far-field diffraction pattern is produced, using light of wavelength 500 nm incident on a single slit of width 0.1 mm and viewed on a screen 1 m distant. A piece of material, of thickness 0.1 mm, is inserted in front of the slit which has a refractive index which varies linearly, from 1.4 at one end of the slit to 1.5 at the other end. Explain quantitatively what happens to the diffraction pattern. [4 marks]
