CASE: A 28 year old male patient was allegedly involved in a
riot by P. Noval and sustained a stab wound in the
left lower abdomen. He was immediately brought to USTH Emergency
Department. Patients was
anxious with the vitals as follows: Pulse Rate: 126 thready and
narrow, Respiratory Rate: 27, BP 70
palpatory, O2 saturation of 93% and Temperature of 36.4C.
Evaluation of the stab wound showed a 6-
7cm deep wound with profuse active bleeding. He was immediately
brought to the OR for emergency
explore laparotomy and 2 units of whole blood and 1 unit of packed
RBC was ordered from the blood
bank.
What do you think is the basis for ordering 2 units of whole
blood and 1 unit of packed RBC,
instead of just ordering 3 units or whole blood?
