related groups of animals. In Drosophila, one such gene is
called Eyeless. Flies with a knockout mutation in Eyeless do
not develop eyes. A very similar gene in mammals is called
PAX6. Mice with a knockout mutation in PAX6 do not develop
complete eyes. The two genes are very similar: if a
normal PAX6 gene from a mouse is transplanted into an Eyeless
mutant Drosophila, the fly develops normal fly eyes. Remember
that fruit flies have compound eyes, and mice have camera
eyes. Mice and fruit flies last shared a common ancestor more
than 400 million years ago. What does this imply for the
evolution of eyes in animals, and what can you infer about the type
of eye that the common ancestor of flies and mice had, if
any? Are the compound eyes of a fruit fly and the camera eye
of a mouse homologous or independently derived?
