Microscope and Cell Structure Review 129 B. Refer to Table 2.1 to review the functions of the parts of the microscope Table 2.1. Parts of the Microscope Microscope Part Function Eyepiece Contains ocular lens, which magnifies images as seen through the eyepiece Nosepiece Contains objective lenses, Objective lenses Magnify image in conjunction with the ocular lens. Body tube Holds the nosepiece at one end and the eyepiece at the other end Arm Support upper parts and provides a handle for carrying the microscope. Light source Attached lamp that directs a beam of light through the specimen Flat surface that rests on the table generally contains the Base light source. Condenser Converges light beam to pass through the specimen. Supports slide. Stage Mechanical stage control knobs Allows precise control in moving the slide Stage clips Holds microscope slide firmly in place. Coarse adjustment knob Provides gross movement for initial focus. Fine adjustment knob Used to bring specimen into sharp focus Diaphragm Controls amount of light used to view the object. Use the information in Table 2.1 to complete the following exercise. To the right of each state- ment below, indicate whether the statement is true or false. Then, if the statement is false, correct the bold-faced word to make it true. 1. The condenser controls the amount of light used to view the object 2. The fine adjustment knob provides the gross movement for initial focus, 3. The nosepiece rotates to change the ocular lenses. 4. The mechanical stage control knobs allow precise movement of the slide. True 5. The stage clips hold the microscope slide firmly in place.
