Whales/dolphins evolved from hoofed land mammals. During
evolution, the forelimb was converted to a flipper and the hindlimb
was lost.
The AER/FGF signaling is present longer in the embryo. Maybe
Grem1 is involved? Think about how cic-regulatory changes in
SHH-Grem1-AER/FGF would change to lead to this
phenomenon.
