Required information
Our bodies have a variety of muscles, each specialized for a
particular role in movement. A muscle is specialized in its
location, size, shape, and even in the composition of its muscle
fibers.
Explore this interactive graph to discover
how specific muscles contribute to different activities, and how
their muscle fiber compositions differ.
Choose an activity from the dropdown menu and notice the muscles
that play a role in that activity. Choose specific muscles to learn
about them in detail under the Explore Muscles tab. Click the Fiber
Types for Major Muscles tab to learn about type 1 and type 2 muscle
fibers and the different compositions of specific muscles.

According to research presented in the Proceedings of
the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS),
chimpanzee muscles, like the gastrocnemius, are capable of
producing greater power than the same muscle in humans. O’Neill et
al (2017), presented data that show the gastrocnemius muscle from
chimpanzee exceeds human muscle in power and force by about 1.35
times. Their experiments showed that individual muscle fibers from
the gastrocnemius had the same contractile force as individual
human muscle fibers, but the muscle as a whole provided more
power.
Predict which of the following is the approximate fiber
composition of chimpanzees’ gastrocnemius?
