Consider a water/air powered rocket, shown schematically in the
image below. This is a very simple and safe rocket experiment (if
you’re interested, search around on google and build your own),
where a soda bottle is partially filled with water, and then the
air inside is pressurized using a bicycle pump. The pump is
disconnected suddenly, and the pressurized air pushes water out of
a nozzle in the bottle cap, launching the rocket. Some typical
nozzles are pictured below. If the air inside is pressurized to 100
psig (689 kPa gauge) and the nozzle has a diameter of 3/16” (4.76
mm), find the thrust produced by the rocket when it launches.
Assume the rocket body diameter is much larger than the nozzle
diameter, and the water leaves the nozzle as a free jet.
