Latent Heat is the energy that is either transferred into, or
out of, a material as it changes phase. This part of the lab will
attempt to measure the Latent Heat of Fusion of water. This
is the amount of energy (per gram) needed to turn 0°C ice into 0°C
liquid. For water, this value is 80 cal/g.
Use warm
tap water at about 40°C. This water will be poured into
a large double Styrofoam cup, into which you will later add an ice
cube.
This time, a single temperature probe will monitor the
temperature change of the mixture. When equilibrium is reached, the
temperature will remain constant and the ice will be completely
melted.
For this experiment, the Conservation of Energy statement
becomes:
QLost by warm
water=Qmelt
ice+Qraise temperature of melted ice
to Tf
Mass of empty Styrofoam cups = _____17.4____________ g
Mass of empty Styrofoam cups + water =
_____91____________ g
Mass of water in cup = ______73.6___________ g
Obtain the following information after you stop
collecting data:
Mass of empty Styrofoam cups + water + ice =
________650.5_________ g
Mass of ice added to water = _____559.5____________
g
T0 = ____46.31_____________
°C
Tf = _____33.71____________ °C
find,
Q warm water = mc delta T
= (73.6)(1)( -12.6)
= -927.36
Q (Lost by warm water) = _____-927.36___________
cal
Q (Gained by ice/water) = ________________ cal
Q= (559.5)(0.50)(
(This is the total energy used to both
melt the ice and raise the melted ice to the equilibrium
temperature, Tf.
Q (to raise temperature of melted ice to Tf
) = ___________________ cal
Q (to melt the entire ice cube) = ___________________

Q (to melt 1 gram of your ice cube) =
___________________ cal
