Design of a multi effect evaporation system A feed-forward triple effect evaporation system is used to concentrate a dilute solution of caustic soda. Feed: 6 kg/s of 14 wt.% caustic soda solution at 75 °C Production: 47 wt.% caustic soda solution at 39 °C Utility: Saturated steam at 150 °C Using heat and mass balance calculations, design the system by completing the following tasks. Task-1: (10-marks) Summarise design basis, chemical/thermodynamic data, and all assumptions required for the design calculations. Justify each assumption. Task-2: (60-marks) Calculate (a) operating temperature in all three effects and (b) heat transfer area and utility (steam) required in each effect. Your calculations must satisfy the condition that the heat transfer area in each effect should be equal (with accepted variation of +10%). Consider overall heat transfer coefficient in each effect in a range of 1200-3000 W/m²K. Overall heat transfer coefficient (U) in the first effect = 3000 W/m²K, U2 = 2000 W/m²K, and Us = 1250 W/m²K Also consider boiling point elevation and heat of solution in your calculations. Task-3: (20-marks) Select suitable tube diameter and length. Select material of construction of tubes. Justify your selections. Calculate the number of tubes required in each effect. Taks-4: (10-marks) Submit a typed report that includes explanation methods, equations, calculations, chemical/thermodynamic data, summary of results, references, nomenclature, Turnitin similarity report etc.
