The above system of flocculation and settling basins is proposed for removal of soluble phosphorous (P) by precipitation. You are given the following information: Flow: influent flow= 50 liters/sec ratio of recycle flow to influent flow = 0.30 ratio of waste flow to influent flow = 0.01 influent i concentartion = 10 mg/liter fractional removal of P by system = 0.95 Precipitaion rate: - -kP' where k = 0.02 ingliter seil k at preup For every gram of soluble phosphorous removed, three grams of precipitate are formed. Assumptions: The system is at steady state. Precipitaion occurs only in the flocculation basin. Flocculation basin is completely mixed. Settling occurs only in the settling basin. There are no solids in the system effluent. a) What is the purpose of the solids recycle? b) Given the above information, determine the volume of the flocculating basin. Define your variables clearly. c) What is the solids concentration in the waste stream (mg/l)?
