ARCH206-Homework 4 For the column and loading condition shown below, calculate the buckling load for both directions (X and Y), advise what to do to increase critical load of the weak axis, and calculate the new Critical load. Use your own L value from Homework 2. Mechanical properties of the material used to construct the beam are given in the table provided below (ignore the column's own weight). A PCritical Cross-section of the beam 12 cm 2 cm I 10 cm 2 cm L 12 cm B Material Type of Stress Compressive Modulus of Elasticity Oall [MPa] (Allowable Stress) 250 200000 Steel
Explanations for HW4 P critical A Cross-section of the column 2 cm 2 cm L I 10 cm 2 cm 12 cm B 2L 1 Explanations for the HW4 А PCritical Cross-section of the column 12 cm 2 cm 10 cm 2 cm L 12 cm The critical load is calculated by the formula below: TT2E1 Pcritical = Le ² 2 Notice that the W section has a major and minor axis and therefore there will be 2 critical loads. Also Notice that this column is fixed end from one side, meaning that the effective Length (Le) is different from L. Use the table provided in the class to figure out the effective length. To Increase the critical load you have to brace the column in the middle in the minor axis direction. Once this is done the effective length becomes half of prior Length, which will result in increase in load 4 times, prove this increase.
