Question 6 A small hydroelectric scheme comprises a storage reservoir, surge tank, and turbine house hydraulically connected by a single pipeline of 800 mm diameter with a Darcy friction factor of 0.022. Under normal operating conditions, water is conveyed to the turbines at a rate of 1 mº/s. The surge tank has a cross-sectional area of 4 m2 in plan and is positioned 100 m upstream of the turbine house and 1400 m downstream of the reservoir. Using Table Q6 as a template and time intervals of 20 seconds, plot a graph of water levels within the surge tank for up to a 2 minute period following an instantaneous turbine shutdown, and hence determine the maximum surge height. 25 Marks Table: Q6 t V -dy HF у Hry -dy = t=time interval v=velocity = 7.76 dy = change in water level dy=change in velocity He=headloss due to friction y= water level in surge tank (above/below reservoir level) Max. height + 2,80 70756,
