Problem 1 (35 points) A simply supported beam is subjected to a concentrated load, shown in Figure I. The beam has a rectangular cross section, shown in Figure 2. The moment of inertia of the beam with respect to the neutral axis is (1/12)(width depth/3. (1) Draw the shear diagram, and find the maximum shear and its location. (10 points) (2) Draw the bending moment diagram, and find the maximum bending moment and its location. (10 points) (3) Determine the maximum tensile and compressive stresses in the beam.
