Q1.2 (50 Marks) Figure Q1(a) shows a 1000 mm diameter circular steel plate of 12 mm thickness and has a centre

hole of diameter 100 mm. The plate outer edge is rigidly fixed to a supporting frame. Pressure load of 0.5 MPa is

applied on the top surface of the plate.

I. Perform a 3D FEA analysis (Creo Simulate) for the plate and show contour plots of radial stress, hoop

stress, radial strain, hoop strain of top, middle and bottom planes of the plate (horizontal planes). What is

the maximum vertical displacement and the location?

II. Using symmetry perform a 3D FEA analysis (Creo Simulate) for a quarter of the plate and show plots of

radial stress, hoop stress, radial strain, hoop strain of top, middle and bottom planes of the plate. What is

the maximum vertical displacement and the location? Compare the results with full plate analysis (i).

III. Extract strain at a point in radius 120 mm on the bottom surface of the plate. Using 2D plane stress and

plain strain equations, calculate stresses at the same point and compare answers with FEA stress results

of the same point (I,ii) (Tabulate, calculated stress (plane stress, plane strain), stress from analysis I and II

for the same point for comparison). Comment on your comparison.
