a) The aluminium post A has a diameter of d = 50 mm and is surrounded by a brass tube B with a thickness of 12 mm and external radius of 75 mm. The post and the tube are connected at the top by a rigid cap and rest on rigid surface as shown in Figure Q1. Given the moduli of elasticity of aluminium and brass are Ea = 70 GPa and Ebr = 101 GPa, respectively, if a force of 25 kN is applied to the rigid cap, determine the average normal stress developed in the post and the tube. (12 marks) b) If the centric 25 kN force is removed and the whole system (I.e. the post and the tube) is heated so that its temperature increases by 70°C, determine the normal stress (1) in the aluminium post, (ii) in the brass tube. Coefficients of thermal expansion for brass and aluminium are 20.9 10-6/°C and 23.9x10-6°C, respectively (13 marks) 25 kN B B 250 mm А K 75 mm 50 mm
