A process experiment is carried out to help identify the factors
that tend to lead to a lower quality of product in a production
run. For a sample of units produced, the
temperature and pressure at which
they were made is measured as was the time taken
to make each unit. Also recorded was the source of
the primary raw material used (A, B, C or D), whether the
manufacturing mode was hand-made or machine-made
and the production speed of the machine at the
time the unit was made (30, 40 or 50 units per minute). The output
variables are the mass of the finished product and
a subjective measure of the quality of the unit
(poor, fair, good, excellent) as assessed by the operator and
independently, by the line supervisor
qualitySuper.
A simple regression model is fitted, with
temperature regressed on time
with a = 18.6 ,b = 3.9 r = 0.22
a.
temperature changes by 18.6 for every one unit
change in time
b.
The model predicts a value for temperature of
18.6 when time is 0
c.
The model predicts a value for temperature of
3.9 when time is 0
d.
Predicting a value for temperature using a
value for time outside the observed range for
time is constitutes interpolation.
e.
4.8% of the variation in temperature is
accounted for by factors other than time.
