1.Which short story elements does “Dressing Up for the Carnival”
contain? In your view, what is the predominant element? Answer
these questions as a part of the daily journal.
2.Create another episode for “Dressing Up for the Carnival,”
exploring the perspective of another character placed in this town.
You might imitate Shields’ writing style and/or expand on her ideas
or themes. After your writing is complete, go back to the story and
see where your episode would best fit. Did you find it easy or
difficult to match your writing with that of Shields?
Explain.
3.Develop a proposal for a film adaptation of this story. How
would a filmmaker capture the atmosphere of the story and convey
the ideas Shields presents? Your proposal should consider some or
all of the following aspects of the film: atmosphere, setting,
character (who you would cast), dialogue (whether you would add
conversation), music/sound effects, and film technique (camera
angles, shots, editing techniques). It should also include a
storyboard for one scene of the film. This is a presentation that
will be a part of the portfolio section, it should be 15-20 mins in
length.
