The figure shows a portion of an AISI 1040 steel shaft, forged
and heat-treated, which has machined surfaces with dimensions D=1.5
in and d=1 in. The heat treatment process results in minimum
tensile strengths of 100 kpsi and yield strengths of 70 kpsi. The
shaft section at the shoulder is subjected to a bending moment with
full reversal of 800 lb-in, a constant torque of 400 lb-in and an
alternating torque of 200 lb.in and an axial load varying from -80
to 120 lb. Determine the factor of safety for infinite duration and
the factor due to creep
