The axis of a train carriage is shown schematically below. The
axle made of St 50 steel is exposed to a dynamic load of 8 tons.
The continuous strength value (Endurance limit) for St 50 steel is
240 N/mm2. For this application, the surface roughness factor can
be taken as 0.85 and the notch effect factor can be taken as 1.5.
The required dimensions of the construction are given in the
figure. a. Calculate the bending moment in sections A-A and B-B. b.
Calculate the factor of safety for these two sections.
