Electromagnetism is a branch of physics that deals with the study of the electromagnetic force.
The magnetic field force produced by an electromagnet (called the magnetomotive force, or
mmf), is proportional to the product (multiplication) of the current through the electromagnet
and the number of complete coil “turns” formed by the wire. Mechanically, an electromagnet is
pretty simple. It consists of a length of conductive wire, usually copper, wrapped around a piece
of metal.
a) A current-carrying conductor is situated at right angles to a uniform magnetic field having a density of
0.3 T. Calculate the force (in newtons per metre length) on the conductor when the current is 200 A.
b) Calculate the current in the conductor referred to in Q.1a when the force per metre length of the
conductor is 15 N
c) A conductor, 150 mm long, is carrying a current of 60 A at right angles to a magnetic field. The force on
the conductor is 3 N. Calculate the density of the field.
d) A coil of 1500 turns gives rise to a magnetic flux of 2.5 mWb when carrying a certain current. If this
current is reversed in 0.2 s, what is the average value of the e.m.f. induced in the coil?
