Consider an airplane flying over the surface of the ocean, for which o=4 S/m, &r.=81 and 1. The airplane communicates with a submarine by transmitting a signal at 1 MHz, using a trailing long wire antenna. This transmitted wave may be assumed to be a uniform plane wave with Ei=2000cos(@t-Bız)a V/m, which is incident normal to the ocean surface (ocean surface is the x- y plane). Find (a) Attenuation constant a and propagation constant B in both mediums (let mediuml=air and medium2=ocean). (b) Reflection coefficient I, (c) Transmission coefficient t. (Hint: the ocean may be classified as a good conductor which can be seen by calculating 02/22) (d) If the submarine requires a minimum signal level of 5uV/m for adequate reception, determine the maximum communication depth of the submarine. (e) Time average power transmitted through 1m² area of ocean surface (evaluate at z=0). (1) Time average power dissipated in the surface of the ocean that is one skin depth =25.2 cm deep, and that has an area of Im.
