Question 4 - Transmission Lines a) A 1.2MW load at a power factor of 0.8 is received at the end of a 11km, 3 phase line. The resistance of the line is 0.5302/km, and the inductance is 1.72mH/km. The receiving end voltage is 11kV at a frequency of 50Hz. Calculate the sending end voltage, power loss in the line and the change in line loss if the p.f. is reduced to unity. (13 marks) b) Describe the relationship between Line-to-Neutral and Line-to-Line in a 3-phase system. (4 marks) c) Explain how the ABCD matrix is derived from voltage and current relating to a transmission line. Your explanation should also interpret what A, B, C and D are in relation to their units from the point of view them being coefficients. (4 marks) d) A 3-phase system has conductors arranged symmetrically as shown below: a D The symmetrically spaced three-phase 11 kV, 50 Hz line has a conductor separation distance of 2.5m and conductor radius of 1 cm. Eo is 8.854x10-12 F/m. Calculate the line to neutral capacitance/km and the capacitive current in each conductor.
