INVESTIGATION: Surveying the Members of Your Class This group activity is designed to determine the number of students present in your class without actually counting the members one by one. This will be accomplished by having each member of the class determine one particular set in which he or she belongs, and then finding the sum of the cardinal numbers of the subsets. For this activity, we designate three sets: X, Y, and Z. X = students in the class registered with the Republican Party Y= (students I the class 24 years of age or younger) Z= (students who have never been married Each student in the class will belong to one of the sets X. X', one of the sets Y, Y", and one of the sets Z. Z As an example, suppose that a student is a 23-year-old divorced Democrat. The student belongs to the sets X". Y, and Z". The set to which the student belongs is XoYoZ'. In the Venn diagram that follows, the eight subsets are identified by lowercase letters (a)-(h). The final column in the following table will be completed when a survey is made. Each student should now determine to which set he or she belongs. (The student described earlier belongs to ().) Region (a) (6) Description in Terms Number of Class of Set Notation Members in the Set Xornz xornz XYZ |xnxnz X'Y'Z XYZ xnY Z xnYn2 e) The instructor will now poll the class to see how many members are in each set. Remember that each class member will belong to one and only one set.
