A researcher is interested in whether students perform better on exams when they study with a partner compared to studying alone. She hypothesizes that high GPA students benefit more from studying with others than do low GPA students. Twenty-eight participants were randomly assigned to a condition where they either studied with a partner (n=14) or studied alone (n=14). The 28 participants were also grouped by their GPA levels, with one group having high GPA (n=14) and a second group with low GPA (n=14). After the study session, students took an exam where higher scores indicate better performance.

To conduct a 2-way ANOVA, go to Analyze>General Linear Model>Univariate. Place your DV in the “Dependent Variable” box and your IVs in the “Fixed
Factor(s)” box. Under Options, select Descriptive Statistics. Also, under Plots, create a graph. Choose GPA to be on the horizontal axis, and separate lines for Studying Alone vs With a Partner. Make sure to click “Add” and see the variables show up in the lower box before clicking to Continue. Click OK on the next screen to run the test.
a) Describe the main effect of Studying Condition, including the following: Name of the effect (main effect of…), if it is significant, state that you are averaging across the other IV, state the direction of the difference (more, less, same), include marginal means (M = ) for each level, state the names of each level, specify the DV.
b) What is the obtained F for the main effect of GPA on exam scores? Be sure to include the numerator and denominator df.
c) Using the p value from the SPSS output, make a statistical decision about the main effect of GPA, assuming α = .05
d) Describe the main effect of GPA, including the following: Name of the effect (main effect of…), if it is significant, state that you are averaging across the other IV, state the direction of the difference (more, less, same), include marginal means (M = ) for each level, state the names of each level, specify
the DV.
What is the obtained F for the interaction of STUDYING CONDITION and GPA? Be sure to include the numerator and denominator df
Using the p value from the SPSS output, make a statistical decision about the Studying Condition x GPA interaction, assuming α = .05.
