4. Pretend you are a member of the IRB. Read the following proposal on personal space in the lavatory and answer these questions (your responses should be in complete sentences): (6 points)
a. What ethical issues can you see with this proposed study? (Be specific-what APA ethical standards/guidelines discussed in class may be violated?)
b. What modifications would you propose in order to address the ethical issues you mentioned above?
Personal space is defined as an area with invisible boundaries surrounding an individual and into which others may not come. Past research has suggested that people seek comfortable interpersonal distances and will move away when others invade their space. This study examines the impact physical space violations have on physiological responses. It is hypothesized that personal space invasions produce physiological arousal as measured by delay of onset and duration of men’s urination. Men using a three-urinal lavatory at a Midwestern university will serve as participants. According to a previously determined schedule of random assignment, a confederate will stand at the urinal directly adjacent to the subject, will stand one urinal away, or will be absent from the lavatory. An observer with a periscope will be concealed in a toilet stall and will record measures of urination. The periscope will be directed so that the observer cannot see the participant’s faces.
