1. Many cigarette smokers have attempted to quit. Unfortunately, nicotine is highly addictive. There are different methods that are employed to help them quit such as patches, hypnosis, and various forms of therapy. A researcher for the Addiction Research Council wanted know why some people are able to quit, while others that attempted to quit failed. He surveyed 1000 people who planned to quit smoking. He determined their educational level and whether, one year later, they had quit smoking (Yes or No). Educational level was categorized with: did not finish high school (DNF); high school graduate (HS); college graduate (C); and completed an advanced degree (A). The contingency table of results is below: No Yes Total DNF 34 23 57 HS 251 212 463 ะก 159 248 407 A 16 57 73 Total 460 540 1000 a) Can we conclude, at the .05 level of significance that education level is a factor in determining if a smoker will quit? b) Compare the education levels using the sample proportion that were able to quit. How do these relate to the result of the test? Do you see any pattern to the dependence, if it is significant?
