3. [-727 Points] DETAILS PODSTAT6 15.1.009.MI.SA. MY NOTES ASK YOUR TEACHER PRACTICE ANOTHER This question has several parts that must be completed sequentially. If you skip a part of the question, you will not receive any points for the skipped part, and you will not be able to come back to the skipped part. Tutorial Exercise A research paper describes an experiment in which 74 men were assigned at random to one of four treatments. 1. viewed slides of fit, muscular men 2. viewed slides of fit, muscular men accompanied by diet and fitness-related text 3. viewed slides of fit, muscular men accompanied by text not related to diet and fitness 4. did not view any slides The participants then went to a room complete a questionnaire. In this room, bowls of pretzels were set out on the tables. A research assistant noted how many pretzels were consumed by each participant while completing the questionnaire. Data consistent with summary quantities given in the paper are given in the following table. Treatment 1 Treatment 2 Treatment 3 Treatment 4 9 5 2 5 6 9 6 1 3 0 1 5 14 3 0 7 1 8 4 5

Treatment 1 Treatment 2 Treatment 3 Treatment 4 9 5 2 5 6 9 6 1 3 5 14 3 0 7 1 8 4 5 2 9 0 1 0 5 4 0 9 2 3 0 12 6 3 2 0 9 6 4 2 9 6 1 5 7 5 4 7 13 8 3 3 8 3 3 15 0 0 6 5 7 5 4 4 11 12 7 5 10 9 5 2 10

Do these data provide convincing evidence that the means for the numbers of pretzels consumed are not the same for all four treatments? Test the relevant hypotheses using a significance level of 0.05. Step 1 A hypothesis test is to be conducted to determine if the type of slides viewed by men had an effect on the mean number of pretzels consumed while completing a questionnaire. The null hypothesis, Ho, is a statement that is assumed to be true. The alternative hypothesis, Ha, is what the test is attempting to establish. If the type of slides viewed have no effect, then the population mean number of pretzels consumed will be the same for all treatment groups. The alternative hypothesis for testing the equality of population means will always have the same form, that they are not all equal. Note that this does not necessarily mean that each treatment's population mean is different, just that they are not all the same value. Therefore, we have the following hypotheses. O Ho: all four 's are different Наи, = 2 = 2 = 4 Оно: и, = и, = = 4 Hz: at least two of the four 's are different O HO: Hy + Hly + H3 + H4 Ha: at least two of the four u;'s are the same O Ho: at least two of the four 's are different Haily = H2 = 3 = 14 O Hs: = 2 = AB = 14 Ha: all four 's are different Submit Skip_(you cannot come back)
