Major choices are determined both by objective and subjective beliefs about own ability. Subjective beliefs change during college as students learn about their abilities. A group of researchers is concerned that women respond differently than men to negative signals of ability, such as lower grades. To address this issue, they study the major choices of 160 PPES students whose first-year course averages place them just above or below the III.
