ntroduction:
Once you’ve grown accustomed to seeing the world through a
sociological lens it becomes second nature to do so. Since you’ve
been honing your sociological imagination and analytic skills I’d
like you to select a movie that deals with illness in some way and
then analyze it using a sociological lens.
Here are a few (non-scholarly) websites with suggestions:
Meriah Nichols: Movies About Rare Diseases and Disorders That
Are Awesome (Links to an external site.)
IMDB: Films with any kind of illness (Links to an external
site.)
The Mighty: 9 Oscar-Nominated Films That Got Disease and
Disability (Mostly) Right (Links to an external site.)
If you have a question about whether a film would be appropriate
or not don’t hesitate to email and ask.
Directions:
For this assignment, watch and take notes on the movie you
selected.
You will do an analysis of the film focusing on illness
experience. Be sure to use examples from the film and address the
following points:
Briefly describe the plot of the movie, main characters, and the
social and political concerns of the time
What illness or condition is featured? Give a brief
overview.
How is illness depicted? How does the character experiencing the
illness manage it?
Discuss the role of medicalization (be sure to define this
concept in your own words)
Discuss how race, class, gender, and sexuality come into play
(This should be an intersectional analysis where you discuss how
these structures and identifiers are combined to produce various
social locations. Remember, the task of sociology is to make the
familiar strange!)
As always, be sure to properly cite the text and the film.
