Two principles I believe are the most important is that they are
socioculturally relevant and outcome evaluation. Being
socioculturally relevant is important because a program that is
general and not tailored to the participants and their needs is
usually only affective for those who do not need it (Nation et al.,
2003). The main challenge of ensuring programs are socioculturally
relevant is when designing a program that needs to work across many
different groups who may have conflicting needs is the necessary
interventions may not be possible simultaneously. Outcome
evaluation is important because this is what shows whether or not a
program is effective (Nation et al., 2003). The main challenge to
applying outcome evaluation is that it does not always correlate
with programs that are believed to be effective. An existing
intervention program aimed at youth risk behavior is Drug Abuse
Resistance Education, more commonly known as DARE. The program is
applying many principles that include, being comprehensive,
sufficient dosage, theory driven, positive relationships,
appropriately timed, and outcome evaluation. DARE is a
program that teaches refusal skills to adolescents when faced with
the choice of using drugs (Drug). It is comprehensive because it
includes family, peers, and community (Drug). It has a sufficient
dose there are 17 lessons lasting approximately 45 minutes to an
hour each (Drug). It is theory driven, DARE uses the social
influence approach (Drug). DARE uses positive relationships by
utilizing peer and trusted adult interations (Drug). DARE is
appropriately timed because it starts during 5th or
6th grade which is where experts believe children’s
brain is most receptive to the antidrug message and is young enough
where most children may not have come into contact with drugs yet
(Drug). It uses outcome evaluation by performing many studies to
refine the program (Drug).
