Beatrice (“Bea”) Hockenberry is pregnant for the third time. Her
two previous pregnancies ended abruptly with Bea delivering at 32
and 33 weeks, respectively. Bea is anxious because she is
approaching her 31st week and is fearful that history will repeat
itself and that she will delivery early. Her pregnancy is being
monitored closely, but her obstetrician has concerns as well. She
is generally in good health, although she is a very busy, single,
working mother of two, smokes, and drinks the occasional glass of
wine. Her first preemie was born 12 years ago so Bea is hoping
treatment options have improved since then.
1. What medical interventions are most beneficial and most
effective?
2. Although Bea has been through this before, what signs and
symptoms of preterm labor are important for Bea to remember?
3. What risk factors can Bea alter to prevent preterm labor or
delivery?
