(a) Two identical three-jet Pelton wheels produce the same hydraulic power using a geodetic head of 750 m. The diameter of each jet is 90 mm. Assuming discharge coefficient of 0.98 for each nozzle, and overall head losses of 40 m in the single penstock feeding both turbines, determine the mass flow rate in the penstock, knowing that the water density is 1 kg/dm3. (10 marks) (b) The two Pelton turbines are mounted on the same shaft connected directly to an electrical generator, and operate in conditions of maximum hydraulic efficiency. The jet deflection in the buckets is 164ยบ. The kinetic energy of the relative water stream decreases by 5% between the bucket exit and the bucket entry. State the cause of this energy reduction, and calculate the hydraulic power produced by each turbine. (14 marks) (c) The generator produces electricity at 50 Hz, and has four polar pairs. Determine the mechanical torque on the generator, knowing that 5% of the hydraulic power of each turbine is dissipated by mechanical losses in the wheel and generator bearings. (13 marks) (d) Draw as accurately as possible the velocity triangles at bucket entry and bucker exit, and state which of the six velocity vectors you have drawn determines the water kinetic energy lost by the power plant.
