The strength of a given aluminium alloy with no particles present is 20 MPa. The increase in the yield strength due to reinforcement by tiny particles is given by Equation (1). A metal matrix composite consists of an aluminium matrix phase reinforced with hard particles of Sic with a mean spacing of 5 microns. The increase in shear strength due to this dispersion strengthening is 40MPa. Calculate the size of the dispersion strengthening on the shear strength if the concentration of the particles is increased such that the inter-particle spacing decreases to 4 microns, then determine the total shear yield strength of the metal matrix composite. Finally, use your answer to determine the tensile strength of the material, and give this as your answer in MPa. Eb Eq (1) Td= L Oy y ~ 3ły Eq (2)
