CONCEPTUAL MODELLING Athletes Database As chief sports editor and database expert at the Daily Sun newspaper, you have been asked to design an ERD for a database application. The database will keep track of the exploits of local and overseas athletes. Each athlete has a name, date of birth, age (calculated from the date of birth), nationality, club and the country he/she represents. Athletes specialize in particular types of events such as track, field, swimming etc. Each athlete has a coach. Coaches have name, contact numbers and email address. Athletes can change coaches and so over a period of time however, only the current coach is required. Coaches are considered to be athletes and hence are stored as such. Each year there are several sports meets. Sports meets are held on specific dates, at a particular venue, country and city. At a meet an athlete may compete in one or more events. The system should keep track of the events that an athlete competes in, how the athlete is placed (1st, 2nd etc) and the athlete's time in the event. Events have names (such as 100 meter, 200 meter etc.), date, world record time, olympic time, best time for the season and best time for the year. You are required to: a) Draw the conceptual diagram (E-R diagram) to depict the above case. Ensure that you show cardinality and participation on the diagram. (State any assumptions you made). [18 marks] b) Write a small paragraph explaining any modification, including additional entities, you would add to the diagram to simplify its representation. [4 marks] c) Derive normalized relations for the ERD in Part A, showing relation names, attributes, primary keys and foreign keys. [8 marks]
