Problem 4 - Consolidation Settlement (30 pts) - A highway embankment 10 m high has been constructed on a clay layer 10 m thick. The embankment fill was compacted at 13% water content to a dry unit weight of 17.7 kN/m2. The clay layer is overlain by 0.5 m of clean sand, and underlain by competent nearly impermeable bedrock. The ground water table is at the surface of the clay. The sand has a dry unit weight of 14.1 kN/m2 and a water content of 6%. The clay has a total unit weight of 21.3 kN/m. Data from a consolidation test on the clay are summarized in Table 1. The coefficient of consolidation was determined to be 8.3 mély, on average. Graph the e-logo' relationship for the soil and determine the overconsolidation ratio. Compute the total settlement. How long is required for the embankment to settle 0.15 m? Table 1.
