(a) A cofferdam is to be built in the middle of a bay to place the foundations of a tall television tower. A plan area of the cofferdar is 30 m long by 10 m wide. Figure QA.2 shows half of excavation. The soil is silt with a permeability k of 0.074 mm/sec. (1) Draw a flow net for seepage on Figure (A.2, which must be handed in with your answer book. (4 marks) (i) Will a large 3 m per minute pump be adequate to maintain a 1 m draw down below the bay bottom? Use FS > 2. (5 marks) (iii) Calculate the pore water pressure at location A as marked in Figure (A.2. (3 marks) (iv) Will piping occur? (3 marks)
