To achieve maximum benefits for the heart, when exercising, the
heart rate in beats per minute (the pulse) should be in the Target
Heart Rate Zone (THRZ). The lower limit (LL) of the THRZ is found
by taking 70% of the difference between the number 220 and the age
of a person. The upper limit (UL) of the THRZ is found by taking
85% of the difference between the number 220 and the age of a
person.
(a) What is the THRZ of a 20-year-old person?
(b) What is the THRZ of a 40-year-old person?
(c) What is the THRZ of a 60-year-old person? Two women in an
aerobics class stop to take their pulse and are surprised that they
have the same pulse. One woman is 36 years older than the other and
is working at the UL of her THRZ. The younger of the two women is
working at the LL of her THRZ.
(d) What are the ages of the two women?
(e) What is their pulse?
