Wireless carriers in the U.S. had offered smartphones, which
cost $300 at the time, for sale at $100 along with a 3-year
contract subject to a default penalty of $500. (If you
switched to another carrier, you had to pay a $500 fee to get out
of the contract.) In many countries this is still practiced
and in some cases the phone is given away for free. Is this
pricing strategy rational?
