State what is meant by the term "wave plate" and describe how it modifies incident linearly polarized light. [1] Polariser Unpolarised Quarter-wave plate X Unpolarised light is passed through a dichroic polariser with its transmission axis p aligned with x and then a Quarter Wave Plate (QWP) whose fast axis is inclined from x by angle 0, as illustrated in the image above. What polarisation states are transmitted by the QWP for alignment angles: (i) 0 = 0, (ii) 0 = π/4 and (iii) 0 = π/2 ? [4]
