Passage:
June Timmer is a 57-year-old woman referred for dietary
counseling for weight loss. She has a family history of Type II
diabetes. She is married with 2 grown children, one of whom works,
but still lives at home. Her husband is employed full-time in
sales. June works half-time at a retail store. She is 5’4” tall and
weighs 185 pounds. Her doctor suggested weight loss to improve her
blood sugar levels. She indicated she had lost weight before but
gained it all back. She is ambivalent about changing her food
habits or family food preferences.
Questions:
1) What would you say to Mrs. Timmer to initiate the
conversation?
2) Using reflective listening, how would you comment on what
Mrs. Timmer has told you thus far?
3) How would you assess June’s motivation for change?
