(d) Oxidation of ferrocene gives the ferrocenium ion, [Fe(15-C5H5)2]*. Provide frontier orbital diagrams for ferrocene and the ferrocenium ion and use these to explain why the Fe-C bonds are shorter in ferrocene than in the ferrocenium ion. (3 marks)
(e) While ferrocene is air stable, cobaltocene, Co(15-C5H5)2, and nickelocene, Ni(n³-C5H5)2, react rapidly with air. Use frontier orbital diagrams of cobaltacene and nickelocene to account for this difference in behaviour. (4 marks)
