Problem 4 (100 points) THE ONE I DIDN' The Three Mile Island nuclear plant in Harrisburg generates 819 MW of electrical power by converting heat energy of the nuclear pile into electrical energy. The nuclear pile is just a big block of radioactive material and the heat is produced from radioactive interactions within the pile. For the purposes of this question we are going to assume that the nuclear pile is a 2x2x2 m³ block. a) If the power plant runs at 33% efficiency, how much heat energy per second does the nuclear pile produce? (30 points) b) If during a nuclear meltdown, the nuclear pile continued to generate this much energy for 48 hours and all the energy went into melting the granite beneath the plant. What volume of granite would it melt? (30 points) e) Assuming the pile maintained its structure and as it melted the granite beneath it, it sunk into the 2x2 m² hole and continued to melt its way down into the earth. How far down into the earth would it go during the 48 hours? (20 points) d) Does it melt its way through to the other side of the planet (China Syndrome)? What percent of the 6000 km diameter of the earth does it achieve? (20 points)
