1. A.H.Compton, while still an undergraduate, came up with a demonstration of the Coriolis Force. A narrow glass tube in the shape of a torus (ring of radius R >> radius tube) is filled with water to which some dust particles are added to make the flow pattern observable. Ring and water are initially stationary and horizontal. The ring is then spun through 180 degree about its east-west diameter. a) Explain why this should cause the water to move around the tube. b) Show that the speed of the water just after the spin should be 2 Q R cos(0). where is the earth's angular velocity. c) What would this speed be if R = 1[m], 0 = 40 degrees?
