NaI(Tl) is used in scintillation detectors and gamma cameras (imaging systems in nuclear medicine). The mass attenuation coefficient for NaI(Tl) is 0.844 cm2/g for 140-keV gamma rays and 0.0586 cm2/g for 1-MeV gamma rays with a density of 3.67 g/cm3 . What fraction of gamma rays of each energy are attenuated by the 3/8-inch-thick crystal of a gamma camera? What does this mean about the imaging of 1-MeV versus 140-keV gamma rays?
