[3] (7 pts.) Short Leash. Before the 1932 discovery of the neutron, some people suggested that the atomic nucleus contained protons and electrons. The proposition for Lithium- 6, for example, was that it contained 6 protons and 3 electrons (instead of containing 3 protons and 3 neutrons). This idea has many problems. For one thing, it makes predictions for the spin and magnetic moment of the Lithium-6 nucleus that are at odds with experiment. (a) Explain specifically how the (neutron + proton) idea and the (electron + proton) idea lead to different predictions for the spin of the Lithium-6 nucleus. (b) Describe another problem associated with the idea that electrons are contained within atomic nuclei.
